Denis develops, analyzes and implements algorithms for large-scale numerical optimization and solution methods for partial differential equations (PDEs). He is the project lead and a lead developer of the Rapid Optimization Library (ROL) software for large-scale and simulation-based optimization. Denis is also a lead developer of Intrepid, a library for compatible PDE discretizations. He applies the developed methods and software to solve engineering problems in the areas of structural mechanics, fluid dynamics and electromagnetics. Denis' recent work includes parallel-in-time methods for extreme-scale dynamic optimization, with applications to the design of electromagnetic metamaterials, and optimization-based solvers for hyperbolic conservation laws and the Monge-Ampère equation.
